Symbol, formula, Valencey and chemical questions, Problems based on chemical equations

ØATOMIC STRUCTURE
Study of cathode rays and discovery of nucleus, Rutherford model of atom, Bohr model of atom ( postulates only), Elementary concept of quantum numbers, Electronic configuration of the (from atomic number 1 to 37) in terms of s.p.d, sub-shells, Electronic theory of valency: Octal rule, Electrovalency, Covalency and coordinate valency. General characteristics of ionic and covalent compounds.

ØOXIDATION AND REDUCTION
Classical definitions, Electronic interpretations of oxidation and reduction, Balancing of redox equations by oxidation number method.

ØPERIODIC CLASSIFICATION OF ELEMENTS: Mendeleev’s periodic law, anomalies in Mendeleev’s periodic table, Modern periodic law, periodic properties, ionization potential, electro negativity and atomic radii, and their variations in the periodic table, Equivalent weight and atomic weight: Concept of equivalent and its determinations by hydrogen displacement and oxide method. Concept of atomic weight, atomic mass unit n relation with atomic weight. Equivalent weight and valency, Determination of atomic weight using Duliong and Petit’s rule.

ØMOLECULAR WEIGHT AND MOLE
Avogadro’s hypothesis and its deductions, Avogadro number and concept of mole, Determination of molecular weight by Victor Meyer’s method, Electro-chemistry: Electrolytes, non electrolytes, strong electrolytes and weak electrolytes, Faraday’s  law of electrolytes, Solubility product principle and its applications in qualitative analysis, Theories of acids and Bases: Arrhenius Theory, Brunsted and lowery Theory, Lewis theory, Volumetric analysis, Equivalent weights of acids base and salts, principle of acidimetric and alkalimetry, pH and pH scale.

ØNON-METALS
Water: hard water and soft water, Causes and removal of hardness of water, Nitrogen and its compounds: Nitrogen cycle, preparation of ammonia and nitric acid in the lab and their properties, Manufacture of nitric acid and ammonia, Sulphur and its compound, Allotropy of sulphur, Preparation of hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide in the lab and their properties, manufacture of sulphuric acid by contact process, Halogens and their compounds: Position of halogens in the periodic table, preparations of chlorine and hydrogen chloride in the lab and their properties.

ØMETALS
Compounds of metals, General methods of preparation and preparation of oxides hydroxides cholorides nitrates sulphates and carbonates of metals, Sodium: Extraction of sodium (Down’s process), manufacture of caustic soda and sodium carbonate, Zinc: Extraction zinc fro m blend, Galvanization , Iron: Extraction of cast iron from hematite, Cast iron, Steel andwrought iron, Types of steel, Manufacture of steel.

Ø ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
Source and purification of organic compounds, characteristics of organic compounds, sources of organic compounds, classification and Nomenclature of organic compounds, Functional groups, homologous series, and isomerism (structural only), common names, and I.U.P.A.C naming system.

ØSATURATED AND UNSATURATED HYDROCARBONS AND AROMATIC COMPOUNDS: 
Preparation properties of methane, acetylene and ethylene, Alkyl Halides: Preparation and properties of ethyl iodide, Aromatic compounds: Structure of benzene, preparation of the benzene in the laboratory and properties of benzene.
